NATO membership in danger?: Swedish police allow Quran to be burned in front of a mosque

A Quran was burned in Stockholm in January. The incident has greatly increased tensions between Turkey and Sweden.

At the beginning of this year, a demonstration by right-wing extremists who burned the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm sparked outrage and heightened tensions between Sweden and Turkey. At the time, Turkey suspended negotiations over Sweden’s application to join NATO.

According to their own statements, the Swedish police have now authorized a protest rally in front of a mosque in Stockholm, where a copy of the Koran will be burned. The demonstration is scheduled for Wednesday, the first day of the Muslim festival of sacrifice, Eid al-Adha, in front of the main mosque in the Swedish capital.

Sweden’s NATO membership is at risk

Despite the existing security risks, “police approve the meeting,” according to the written version of the decision available at AFP news agency. The protest action could also fuel tensions between Sweden and Turkey, which has so far blocked the Scandinavian country’s NATO accession.

Two weeks ago, a Swedish appeals court retroactively rejected police bans on demonstrations planned in February to burn the Quran as illegal. The police had justified the bans with risks to public safety. (SDA)
