The nearly 2,000-year-old Colosseum recently received an inscription: “Ivan + Haley 23”. The creator of this historically valuable contemporary document is a tourist who was caught red-handed by an American who hacked the words into the wall of the amphitheater with a key.
Ryan Lutz of California couldn’t believe it when he saw the perpetrator: “He just kept going and smiling. No shame,” he told the Orange County Register. He then tried to notify an authority figure.
However, the security guard he notified said there was nothing he could do as he was not there when the crime was committed. However, he assured Lutz that authorities would be notified.
The authorities were indeed aware – Italy’s culture minister himself commented on the scandal vandals on Monday:
Reputo gravissimo, indegno en segno di grande inciviltà, che un turista sfregi uno dei luoghi più celebri al mondo, il Colosseo, per incidentere nome della sua fidanzata. Spero che chi ha compiuto questo stewed venga individualato en sanzionato secondo le nostre leggi. pic.twitter.com/p8Jss1GWuY

A penalty would be quite high. If convicted, there is a fine of at least 15,000 euros or a maximum of five years in prison, CNN reports. In 2014, authorities fined a whopping €20,000 to a Russian tourist who carved his initials (a K) into a wall of the Colosseum.
