“Sit here with my dad” – Joe Biden didn’t know about Hunter’s business? Now they are testing Trump

Hunter Biden, the president’s son, reached a settlement with the Justice Department this week. The businessman thus draws a line under the criminal investigation against him. The Republicans smell a scandal.

Good news for Joe Biden for once. The House of Representatives decided on Thursday not to start impeachment proceedings against the president for the time being. Even the Republican right has come to the conclusion that the claim that the president’s immigration policies violated his oath of office is not sufficiently substantiated.

However, that doesn’t mean the Republicans’ zeal to harm Biden in the upcoming presidential campaign will abate. This is one of the reasons why a preliminary advisory committee released new allegations against the president and his family this week.

In a nutshell, they revolve around Hunter Biden, the only surviving son of the current president, and potential Justice Department misconduct. Hunter Biden, 53, this week agreed to a plea deal designed to end years of criminal investigation against him. (The accompanying agreement must still be approved by the appropriate federal judge at the end of July.)

Explosive allegation against Joe Biden

But now a whistleblower who works for the national tax agency IRS (Internal Revenue Service) is claiming that the young Biden is being punished far too lightly for the crimes he committed.

In an hour-long conversation with a House of Representatives committee, IRS agent Gary Shapley alleged that the Justice Department had obstructed the work of the Delaware state attorney general. He also indicated that Joe Biden was personally informed about his son’s sometimes questionable dealings.

The latest accusation is explosive. The president has always maintained that he never personally spoke to his son, who was addicted to drugs, about his company. Biden also said he was never part of Hunter’s deals, even during his (temporary) political retirement after stepping down as vice president in January 2017.

Hunter called his father

In an interview with the congressional committee, IRS employee Shapley presented a Whatsapp message from the summer of 2017, which at least gives a different impression. Accordingly, Hunter wrote:

“I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the promise made has not been fulfilled.”

The recipient of this text message was a Chinese businessman with whom the young Biden (and his uncle James) wanted to make a million dollar deal. It is not clear from the message whether Joe Biden was actually in the same room as Hunter Biden. It is also not known to which promise the son of the current president was referring to at the time.

But the Republicans don’t seem to care. They had long suspected that Hunter was the Biden family’s money uncle, financially supporting his father, a career politician. However, so far there is no hard evidence for this assumption. Even the IRS agent couldn’t produce it last month when he spoke to the congressional committee.

There are already voices on the right warning against taking the latest allegations against the Biden family for granted. Right-wing radio host Erick Erickson called the IRS official’s allegations “too good to be true.” Attorney General Merrick Garland also clearly rejected on Friday the allegation that the work of the responsible prosecutor in the Hunter Biden case had been obstructed.
