In a televised speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled the rebellious Wagner mercenaries as “traitors” who would be punished. The mercenary uprising is a “mortal threat” to Russia, the Kremlin chief said Saturday. He called for “unity” and stressed that he would not allow civil war in Russia.

“I appeal to the citizens of Russia, to the members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and special services, to the soldiers and commanders who now fight on their battlefields, repel the enemy’s attacks and do it heroically – I know that I spoke again tonight with the commanders of all directions.
I also address those who have been lured into this criminal adventure by deceit or threats and have walked the path of the most serious crime, armed mutiny. Today, Russia is fighting hard for its future, repelling the aggression of the neo-Nazis and their masters. Virtually all of the West’s military, economic, and information machines are turned against us.
We fight for the life and security of our people, for our sovereignty and independence. For the right to be and remain Russia – a state with a thousand-year history. This battle, in which the fate of our people will be decided, requires the unity of all forces, unity, consolidation and responsibility. When everything that weakens us, every kind of discord that our enemies can and will use without it to undermine us from within, must be pushed aside.
And so the actions that divide our unit are in fact a defection of our people, of our comrades who are now fighting on the front lines. It is a stab in the back of our country and our people. This is exactly the blow dealt to Russia in 1917 when the country fought in World War I. But victory was stolen from the country. Intrigues, bickering, political machinations behind the backs of the army and the people led to the greatest shock, the defeat of the army and the collapse of the state, with the loss of vast territories. The result was the tragedy of the Civil War.
Russians killed Russians, brothers killed brothers, and the lucrative profits were made by all sorts of political adventurers and foreign troops dividing and tearing the country apart. We will not allow this to happen again. We will protect both our people and our state from all threats. Also against internal treason.
And what we have experienced is precisely this betrayal. Exaggerated ambition and self-interest have led to betrayal. Betrayal of their country, their people and the cause for which Wagner’s fighters and commanders fought and died alongside our other units.
The heroes who liberated Soledar and Artemovsk, cities and villages of Donbass, fought and gave their lives for Novorossiya, for the unity of the Russian world. Her name and fame have also been betrayed by those who tried to organize an uprising and push the country towards anarchy and fratricide. Finally defeat and surrender.
I repeat: any internal unrest is a mortal threat to our state, to us as a nation. It is a blow to Russia, to our people. And our measures to defend the homeland against such a threat will be severe. All those who have deliberately embarked on the path of treason, who have prepared an armed uprising, who have embarked on the path of blackmail and terrorist methods, will inevitably be punished, will have to answer to both the law and our people.
The armed forces and other government agencies have received necessary orders and additional anti-terrorist measures are being launched in Moscow, the Moscow region and a number of other regions. Decisive measures are also being taken in Rostov-on-Don to stabilize the situation. It remains complicated because the work of civil and military authorities is effectively blocked.
As President of Russia and Commander-in-Chief, as a citizen of Russia, I will do everything I can to defend the country, to protect the constitutional order, life, security and freedom of its citizens. Those who organized and prepared the military uprising, who took up arms against their comrades-in-arms, betrayed Russia. And they will be held accountable for it.
And I urge those involved in this crime not to make the fatal and tragic unique mistake, but to make the only right decision – to stop criminal activity. I believe that we will preserve and defend what is dear and sacred to us, and together with our homeland we will overcome all trials and become even stronger.”
