According to Pakistan’s interior minister, some 350 people from Pakistan were on board the migrant boat that sank off the coast of Greece.
A large number of them are still among the missing and probably did not survive the tragedy, Rana Sanaullah said in a parliamentary speech on Friday. So far, 82 dead Pakistanis have been identified and according to the current status, twelve people from the South Asian country are among the survivors. A total of 281 Pakistani families have reported missing. According to Ranaullah, DNA tests should provide more conclusive information.
After the devastating shipwreck last week that killed several hundred migrants, Pakistan held state mourning on Monday. Flags on government buildings flew at half-mast. According to unofficial estimates, about 300 people of Pakistani nationality drowned. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced tougher action against smuggling gangs.
