The US Coast Guard confirmed at a media conference on Thursday evening that it has found debris from the submarine Titan. This is about 500 meters from the Titanic wreck. However, the bodies of the five missing persons have not yet been found, confirms John Mauger, chief of the US Coast Guard.
It is currently unclear whether this will be possible at all. It is an “incredibly brutal environment,” Mauger told the media.
In total, five larger parts of the submarine were discovered. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a remote-controlled underwater vehicle hit the debris.
In a statement, the Oceangate operating company can be quoted as saying: “We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet have sadly lost. This is a very sad time for the entire investigative community and for all family members of the missing.”
The nose of the submarine was also buried under the rubble, according to the US Coast Guard.
