“These statements are absurd and extremely irresponsible,” Beijing Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told the press. She saw a “violation of basic facts and diplomatic protocol” and spoke of a “political provocation”.

At a campaign event with donors in the US state of California on Tuesday, Biden said Xi Jinping was angry because he did not know about the Chinese surveillance balloon that flew over the United States in February. “It’s a great shame for dictators if they didn’t know what was happening,” Biden said. The affair surrounding the alleged spy balloon, which was eventually shot down by the US Air Force, led to a further deterioration in relations.

The fresh irritation came immediately after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing on Sunday and Monday, during which both sides announced their intention to stabilize ailing relations.
