Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that a new generation of nuclear missiles will soon be ready for combat use. These are Sarmat-2 ICBMs capable of carrying up to 14 nuclear warheads. They are called Satan 2 missiles in NATO jargon.
The new Sarmat-2 missile would be capable of launching nuclear strikes against targets in the United States or Europe thousands of miles from the launch site. However, development was slower than planned, reports Reuters news agency. Actually, they should have been ready for use in the fall of 2022. The then head of the Russian space agency, Dmitri Rogozin, suggested a Moscow region 3,000 kilometers from Moscow as the location.

The Satan missiles are about 34 meters long and weigh almost 211 tons. Their range should be up to 18,000 kilometers. The missiles can be equipped with nuclear warheads, but each of them can target individual targets. The numbers vary between 10 and 14, which have space in the rocket. Putin indicated that in addition to the heavy warheads, they can also be equipped with lighter Avangard hypersonic glide bombs. These need not be atomically filled. Apparently, a maximum of 24 of these bombs can be placed in the Sarmat missile.
They can fly very low and should escape enemy radar – also because they fly at a speed of Mach 27 (33,000 km/h) and can change course. However, the Kinzhal hypersonic missile was also hailed by Russia as some kind of invulnerable miracle weapon – several have now apparently been shot down by Patriot defense systems in Ukraine.
During a visit to a military academy, Putin pointed out the importance of nuclear triage consisting of nuclear missiles on land, in the air and at sea, according to Reuters news agency. The Russian ruler himself did not say whether he intends to use the Sarmat-2 missiles in the war in Ukraine.
He recently pointed out that he did not allow a Ukrainian counter-offensive and that Russia saw no need to use nuclear weapons. Before that, however, he had repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons. Recently he announced the transfer of nuclear missiles to Belarus.
How operational the Sarmat missiles really are cannot be independently confirmed. According to US media reports, a test failed in February, but there had apparently been successful launches before.
