It is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of shipping: on April 15, 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg – and sank to the bottom of the sea. A combination of bad luck and mistakes – poorly visible icebergs, a wrong evasive maneuver – probably led to the tragedy that claimed the lives of 1,500 people.

111 years later, the tragedy still fascinates – and the wreck attracts the curious. Also on Sunday: The submarine “Titan” of the shipping company Ocean Gate started the journey to the Titanic with a crew of five, but the journey went wrong. Since then, the “Titan” has been missing. The submarine can even get stuck in the wreckage of the Titanic.

Today the wreck of the Titanic lies at a depth of 3800 meters. With a length of 269 meters, she was the largest ship in the world at the time. Many wealthy passengers traveled with them, which is why the wreck was always the focus of treasure hunters. However, scientists dispute how much was actually kept in the wreck.

Titanic remained undiscovered for 74 years

Photos from the seabed show an enchanted world. Much of the wreckage is overgrown, some parts have probably sunk into the seabed. An investigation of the entire wreck? Impossible. A journey to such depths is not easy. Few submersibles can descend to such a depth. They can’t stay there for long.

But the borders are not only technical, but also moral: there may still be human remains in them.

“Mission Specialists” disappear

Meanwhile, the scientific investigation into the sunken ship continues tirelessly. A 3D scan of the Titanic by production company Atlantic Productions in May showed spectacular images and details down to the millimeter. According to Business Insider, the clock is ticking: The Titanic could be gone by 2030 because bacteria feed on the debris.

So the Titanic remains on the seabed

Ocean Gate made two successful dives to the wreck with the Titan. One in 2021 and one in 2022. Because photos were also taken, the company advertised the dives as scientific expeditions — even though it was more about giving wealthy passengers an exclusive experience for $250,000. It is probably for this reason that the unfortunate passengers on the current dive trip are referred to as “mission specialists” on the Ocean Gate website.
