US President Joe Biden has equated China’s head of state Xi Jinping with a dictator. At a fundraiser in California on Tuesday, Biden brought up the so-called balloon affair.
In February, the US military shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon in US airspace. Xi was upset because he didn’t know where the balloon was at the time it was launched because it was off course, Biden said, adding, “It’s very embarrassing for dictators when they don’t know what happened.” Biden then said, among other things, that China was experiencing “real economic difficulties”.
Initially, there was no response from the People’s Republic. Biden made the statement just a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited China, seeking to ease tense relations between the two countries. During his stay, the US chief diplomat met President Xi, among others. Blinken’s trip was actually scheduled for February, but was postponed because of the balloon affair. The two countries also cross each other on many other points.
