If you want to dive to the Titanic, you should bring the necessary change. German entrepreneur Arthur Loibl paid more than $ 100,000 in 2021 to dive to the wreck – with the same submarine that is now missing, he says in the “Spiegel”.

He knows how it feels to sink into the depths with five people crammed into the capsule. “It must be brutal. It’s the tightest of spaces, there are no chairs, there’s nothing in it. The five of you sit on the floor, so close together that some of your legs cross.”

“I get shivers down my spine”

Loibl says he did get in the submarine, but today “to be honest I’m getting shivers down my spine”. “Today I’m so glad I made it out alive.” In retrospect, it was a suicide mission, he tells the “Spiegel”.

Reason: «At that time there were repeated problems with the batteries, one of the previous dives at a depth of 1600 meters had to be cancelled. In addition, the balancing weights came loose when we lowered the ship from the mother ship. They had to be repaired at the time, so we were on board for an hour and a half longer, a total of more than ten hours.”

“We’re Not Getting In”

There were even three Americans who, seeing the submarine, said: “We’re not coming in”. Loibl itself was tense, but the experience was great. The three hours at the wreck passed far too quickly.

The Titan has been missing since Sunday. The operating company has promised to do everything possible to save the five missing. After a failed localization, however, experts give little hope of finding the missing person alive. (new)
