Parliament passed a law that will allow same-sex marriage from next year. “Everyone should have the right to marry the person they love,” Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said after Tuesday’s vote. She was “proud of Estonia”.
In the vote, 55 MPs voted in favor of the bill, 34 voted against. Prime Minister Kallas’ government also survived a vote of no confidence related to the bill.
Same-sex couples have had the right to enter into a registered partnership in Estonia since 2014. The law that has now been passed removes the legal inequalities that previously existed between homosexual and heterosexual couples. (AFP)
