British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak does not want to commit to a report in parliament about lies by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He doesn’t want to influence the mood.
The conservative party leader said this a few hours before the debate on Monday. “It is important that the government does not interfere, because it is a matter for parliament and the MPs as individuals, not as members of the government.” The newspaper “Times” reported that Sunak will stay away from the vote and thus avoid a commitment. The opposition then accused him of weak leadership.
For the report, a mostly Conservative parliamentary committee came to the conclusion that then Prime Minister Johnson lied to the House of Representatives on several occasions in the ‘Partygate’ affair about banned celebrations during the corona pandemic. The Conservative politician avoided the recommended 90-day suspension from parliament by resigning his mandate. A vote could be a mood barometer of how much support Johnson still enjoys within the ranks of the Tory faction. (saw/sda/dpa)
