Despite a ban on events, activists in Istanbul protested discrimination against transgender people. However, large-scale roadblocks prevented the participants of the “Trans Pride Parade” from demonstrating in central Taksim Square on Sunday as planned. Subway connections were also interrupted there. Activist association Kaos GL reported “attacks” by police against demonstrators.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül had already announced in a tweet on Friday that he would not allow events “that endanger our institution of the family (…)”. Demonstrations and other events related to the so-called Pride month were also banned in other Turkish cities. The annual Pride month in June serves, among other things, to make lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans and queer people (LGBTQ) visible.
In Turkey, the events have already been banned in recent years. The Turkish government under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly expressed hostility to LGBTQ people. (sda/dpa)
