In Vienna, people took to the streets on Saturday to stand up for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

According to the security authorities, the police in Vienna may have thwarted a terrorist attack on the “Rainbow Parade” on Saturday. Just before the event, which was attended by more than 300,000 people, three suspects were arrested who allegedly planned an attack, state security reported on Sunday.

These include a 14-year-old and two 17- and 20-year-old men who sympathized with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia, said the head of the state security and intelligence directorate, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner.

No danger to visitors

There were concrete preparatory actions. However, due to the close monitoring, the trio, which had been under observation for a long time, did not pose a threat to the visitors. Extensive evidence was secured during house searches on Saturday. According to the DSN, sabers, an axe, gas pistols, throwing stars and knives were found.

The “Rainbow Parade” on the Ringstrasse in Vienna was another example for the rights of the LGBTIQIA+ community. The train took place for the 27th time. Particularly, the participants in such events always represented an intense enemy image for many “Islamist or far-right scenes,” said Vienna State Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl. (SDA)
