NATO rejects Ukraine’s invitation to join in July
Kiev was rocked this Friday by the explosions of its anti-aircraft defense, which responded to a missile attack launched by Russia shortly after a delegation of seven African leaders arrived by train in Kyiv to explore the possibility of a peace deal with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine is the first stop of the African mission led by the South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, who will take them to Moscow this Saturday. At the time of the explosions, the leaders were in the town of Bucha, where they paid tribute to the victims of the occupation.
At the press conference after the meeting with the delegation, Zelensky called for a Russian withdrawal achieve a ‘true and just peace’, as she has already done despite all the peace plans presented to her.
On the Russian bombing during the visit, the Ukrainian president said it showed “the real Russian attitude of contempt towards efforts to restore peace and towards all world leaders who are trying to protect the world from aggression”. «Russia is the only source of war and the only reason why the consequences of this war harm the whole world and different peoples on all continents”, he added. President Ramaphosa also mentioned the attack and assured that this type of operation “They don’t do a very good job of bringing peace.”
From the international forum in St. Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin announced that he was the first tactical nukes they have already arrived in Belarus, in a process that will end by the end of the year at the latest, and assured that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is failing. He also accused Zelenskiy, whom he said was “shameful to the Jewish people,” for insulting the president’s legacy.
decision of allies
NATO is convinced that Ukraine will be part of the Alliance in the future, but rules out that this will happen in the short term. Its Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pointed out yesterday that this military organization will not send an official invitation to Kyiv to join the summit that will be held in July in Lithuania, in which Zelensky will participate.
The meeting is expected to serve to “bring Ukraine closer” to NATO and address the needs of its military on the battlefield. Stoltenberg avoided specifying a specific timetable for the country’s entry into the Alliance, which was requested by some Eastern European countries. “The main thing is to provide Kyiv with everything it needs to prevail. At the summit in Vilnius, we will not talk about the invitation, but about how to bring the country closer to NATO, and I am convinced that we will find a good solution,” concluded the political head of that organization after the meeting of defense ministers, which was held this Friday in Brussels. He specified that the country urgently needs more ammunition, fuel and repair parts to ensure that the counter-offensive against Moscow can be sustained over time.
