British actress and two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson is dead, the PA news agency reported Thursday, citing her agent. She turned 87 years old.
Jackson, who also served as a member of the British Parliament for more than two decades, passed away peacefully at her London home surrounded by her family on Thursday morning after a short illness, the agent said in a statement.
She received the Oscar for Best Actress in the 1970s for her roles in the films “Women in Love” (“Loving Women”) and “A Touch of Class” (“Man, are you class!”).
She temporarily gave up her acting career in 1992 when she was elected to parliament. Until 2015 she was a member of the House of Representatives for the PvdA. She later appeared again in films and in the theatre. According to her agent, she recently finished filming a movie titled “The Great Escaper” alongside Michael Caine.
Jackson was born in 1936 in modest circumstances in Birkenhead near Liverpool. In 1964 she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. A few years later, she was also seen on the big screen. (saw/sda/dpa)
