The 62-year-old had demanded 750,000 euros in compensation for pain and suffering. He had been abused by a priest more than 300 times in the 1970s. The Archdiocese of Cologne had decided not to introduce a statute of limitations in the case.

Until now, the Catholic Church in Germany has made voluntary benefits to victims of abuse, the so-called recognition benefits. The responsible Independent Commission for Recognition Services (UKA) in Bonn has so far awarded an amount of more than EUR 50,000 in 143 cases. In 24 cases, the amount involved was more than 100,000 euros. Those affected have repeatedly criticized the payments as too low. (SDA)
