As a gangster rapper you have to come across as tough. At least that’s the belief that many rappers and their fans still succumb to. Homosexuality or transsexuality very rarely fits into one’s own world view. One of the most famous musicians in the genre is Fler from Berlin, who showed with a photo that things can be done differently and was sometimes violently attacked.
What happened? Over the course of “Pride Month,” Fler posed with renowned drag queen Olivia Jones in Hamburg and placed the rainbow flag under the photo. June is dedicated to the LGBTIQ scene every year and promotes more tolerance in society.
The photo of Fler and Olivia Jones quickly went viral and received a lot of comment – there was a lot of praise and encouragement for the rapper, but also a few offensive comments. Underneath the post was the word “Transenf***r” among other things. Another user sees Fler as ‘a disgrace to German rap’ because of the photo.

However, the majority showed solidarity with Fler and celebrated the photo. “It’s nice to see you committed to the LGBTQ+ community and standing up for acceptance and equality. Keep it up,” one user wrote.
And Olivia Jones herself commented on the hostilities. “What is happening with Fler in the comments section is unfortunately a good example of increasing social explosives,” writes the well-known transvestite artist.
“The culprit is a toxic ideal of masculinity, a Stone Age notion of scrolls that is sadly gaining popularity again. We must not allow ourselves to be divided in the fight for equality and against homosexual scumbags. We fight on the same side for tolerance, respect and diversity, so that everyone can live a life of freedom and without fear.”
Fler responded in his own way to the insults under the photo: “It’s sad to see how people leave my comments. Fuck everyone who can’t just respect people! I don’t support any agenda, party or whatever,” writes the 41-year-old.
