Tens of thousands of dead fish wash up in the Gulf of Texas. The reason for this is a “perfect combination” of bad conditions for the animals.
As of Friday, June 9, the beaches of Brazoria County, Texas, about 60 miles south of Houston, have been the foul-smelling mass grave for tens of thousands of “Gulf Menhaden” and other marine life. The reason: there is not enough oxygen in the sea, so the animals die. According to US authorities, several factors are currently contributing to this mass extinction.
Warm water, calm sea, cloudy sky
What actually sounds like optimal conditions for “Bädele” is fatal to the creatures in the sea. Warm water contains less oxygen than cold water. Waves, which normally mix oxygen under water, are also currently missing. In addition, the sky is now intermittently cloudy for extended periods of time, limiting the photosynthesis of microorganisms in the water.
When whole schools of fish in shallow water notice that the oxygen is running low, they panic. This also reduces oxygen.
Not the first mass extinction
Massive fish kills occur again and again in the summer in Texas – the phenomenon is not uncommon. Still, a 2019 United Nations report concluded that warming seawater is increasing the incidence of hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in coastal waters and threatening fish populations. One of the authors also said that oxygen deprivation and other effects of global warming would put the Gulf Coast region “under tremendous pressure” in the future.
In addition, the Gulf of Menhaden played an important role in the ecosystem. If such cases increase, it could have negative consequences for the entire Gulf of Texas, fears Katie St. Clair of “Texas A&M University”.
Fish are buried
Brazoria County Parks Department officials are now working nonstop to remove and bury the fish to prevent them from being banned and giving off an unpleasant odor. (lzo)
