North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un (39) wants to expand cooperation with Russia. The friendship between the two countries has existed for centuries and represents a “valuable strategic asset” for both sides, Kim wrote in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Russia’s National Day on Monday. Kim was reported to have said by state-controlled North Korean media that he was willing to further shape “strategic cooperation between the People’s Republic and Russia” in consultation with Putin.
Against the backdrop of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine, Kim spoke of “full support and solidarity” that his compatriots would send. “Justice will surely prevail and the Russian people will continue to praise the history of victory.”
Even after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the largely isolated North Korea pledged its political support to Putin’s course. In July last year, for example, the leadership in Pyongyang recognized the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which had broken away from Kiev, as independent states after Russia and Syria.
