At least 10 people have been killed in a bus accident in Australia’s Hunter Valley wine region, north of Sydney.
The bus with about 40 occupants ended up on its side on a roundabout for reasons that are still unclear. A police spokeswoman said 25 of the injured were taken to hospital by helicopter and ambulance. It is feared that more victims will fall under the bus.
Bus driver arrested
The 58-year-old bus driver has been arrested. The police spokeswoman said he was being investigated on the basis of concrete evidence – she gave no details. The exact cause and course of the accident were still unclear hours later. According to media reports, the wedding party was on their way back from a winery to their lodging.
“To have a happy end to the day with such a devastating loss is appalling,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote on Twitter. The sympathy of all Australians extends to the bereaved families of “this cruel bus tragedy”.
With its wineries, bushland and kangaroos, the Hunter region is a popular destination for tourists and day trippers. (SDA/AFP)
