On June 6, a yacht left Port Ghalib in eastern Egypt. The boat should return to port on Sunday. However, that did not happen. A fire broke out on board in the morning – according to local authorities, the cause was found in an electrical short circuit in the engine room.

Images show how the stern of the ship is completely engulfed in flames and black smoke rises. A dive manager told Britain’s The Sun: “We saw smoke coming from the boat when it was about nine kilometers from the beach.”

Nearby boat rescued people

According to Egyptian authorities, there were 27 people on the yacht. Twelve crew members and twelve British tourists were rescued by a hasty boat and brought safely ashore. Three British passengers remain missing.

A spokesman for the Tornado Marine Fleet, which owns the boat, told the Sun: “Now we are returning the boat to port under the supervision of authorities.”

Fatal accident in Egypt as early as 2021

For their part, British authorities said: “We are in contact with local authorities following an incident on board a boat near Marsa Alam and are supporting the British nationals involved.”

Unfortunately, this serious accident in Egypt is not an isolated incident. It was not until 2021 that a boat capsized near the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Five people, including three children, were killed. (obf)
