They stick, block and smear: The climate activists of the group “Last Generation” regularly cause a stir – and many police operations. As of early 2020, the group is responsible for 580 crimes. “The federal criminal investigation department has created a national situation picture for the first time,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) of “Bild am Sonntag”. She further explains: “Since the beginning of 2022, 580 crimes can be attributed to the ‘last generation’, 740 people have come to the attention of the police.” It mainly concerns coercion and material damage, says Faeser.
The fact that the activists are trying to draw attention to climate protection in this way is the wrong strategy, she thinks. She strongly criticized the protests. “This is of no use to climate protection, on the contrary: the activists are doing enormous damage to acceptance. We see in many places that the police intervene and activists are brought to justice.” Laws apply to everyone. Breaking them in the name of charity is not the way to go.
Faeser made it clear: “We do not accept activists violating the rights of others.” But there are differences between criminals and extremists, she continued.
Painted private jet
Activists of the last generation regularly tape themselves on the streets, block traffic or deface works of art to draw attention to their demands. Last Thursday, an activist of the last generation was fined 400 euros by the court of Hamburg after a protest in the Audimax of the University of Hamburg for damage to property.
On Tuesday, the activists targeted a private jet on the island of Sylt. They spray painted the machine with orange warning paint and affixed banners with the slogans “Your luxury = our drought” and “Your luxury = our crop failures” on the plane. The activists then glued themselves to the wings.
The group sees itself as the last generation before the tipping points – i.e. points at which a cascading worsening of the climate crisis will begin if they are exceeded. (jmh/AFP)
