According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, counter-attacks are underway in the war against Russia. Selenskyj, however, held back on details on Saturday. “Counter-offensive and defensive actions are taking place in Ukraine, but I will not say what stage they are in,” he said in Kiev. The generals are in a good mood. “Tell that to Putin,” he added.

Ukraine has for months announced a large-scale counter-offensive to retake Russian-held areas in the south and east of the country. Since the beginning of the week, Russia has said the offensive has begun and has so far failed. That’s what President Vladimir Putin said recently. Ukrainian deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said there would be no communication until there was clarity on the battlefield.

When asked to comment on Putin’s comments on Friday, Zelenskyy shrugged and raised an eyebrow. Information about the course of the war cannot be independently verified for the most part. Putin had stated that the deployment of the strategic reserve would speak for the start of the counter-offensive. However, so far the Ukrainian soldiers have had no success. Russia’s defense ministry said on Saturday that Ukrainian soldiers had unsuccessfully tried to advance into the regions of Donetsk and Zaporizhia and the area around Bakhmut in the east.

Selenskyj held back in his evening video address on Saturday, detailing the status of the battles. But he said, “Thanks to all who hold their positions and those who move forward.” The president referred to the front in eastern and southern Ukraine, where the heaviest fighting is taking place. Deputy Defense Minister Maliar told the Telegram short message service that the liberation of a city is not reported when the soldiers enter, but only when the position is consolidated.

The Ukrainian government has so far denied reports that the large-scale counter-offensive has already begun and maintains a strict information block in this regard.

According to the army, the Ukrainian army has advanced up to 1.4 kilometers in some places near Bakhmut. The General Staff stated that Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks on Bakhmut and Marjinka. Russia has suffered heavy losses, which the country is trying to hide. The information cannot be independently verified.

According to British estimates, Ukrainian forces have made some progress in fighting in the south and east of the country in the past 48 hours. In some areas they may have made good progress and overcame the first Russian line of defense, the British Ministry of Defense said. In other areas, however, the advance was slower.

There would have been some credible defensive fighting on the Russian side. However, other units are said to have withdrawn in a disorderly manner. Reports of casualties among Russian troops as they retreated through their own minefields increased.
