Italian special forces overpowered migrants who had hijacked a cargo ship off the coast of Naples. Several people from a group of 15, who had hidden as stowaways on the ship “Galata Seaways” sailing from Turkey to France, overpowered the crew on Friday, according to authorities, and threw the ship off course. Italian naval troops boarded the ship by helicopter, ended the action and arrested the attackers. They were armed with knives and carpet cutters. “Everything went well,” Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto wrote on Twitter.
After the ship, flying the Turkish flag, was piloted into the port of Naples in the evening for further police checks, three of the 15 migrants were reported. Two women – including a pregnant woman – and two men have been taken to hospitals, Ansa news agency said, citing Naples’ health department. The other migrants, who told police they came from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, were taken to a refugee reception center.
On Saturday evening the “Galata Seaways” then left the southern Italian city for Sète in the South of France. (sda/dpa)
