After an Irishman died abroad, his family arranged for a transfer to Ireland where the funeral would take place. The body was flown from Greece to Dublin on Aegean Airlines.

As the “Sunday Independent” reports, the man’s relatives were already waiting there with a hearse on the tarmac. However, the ground crew forgot to unload the coffin and body. And so the body flew back to Greece.

Swiss company should be responsible

After being informed of the accident by the airport employees, family and friends returned home disillusioned. They also had to postpone the funeral they had already planned. The relatives were “devastated”, a source told the Irish “Independent”.

The Swiss company Swissport is responsible for handling at Dublin Airport. After the accident, they organized another flight to Dublin with another airline. The body finally arrived in Dublin the next day.

Swissport wants to learn a lesson

As a result, Swissport, located in Opfikon ZH, has also apologized to the next of kin. In a statement, the company writes: “We deeply regret what the family has experienced during this difficult time and have made every effort to resolve matters as quickly as possible.”

An internal investigation has also been launched “to ensure we learn our lesson,” it said. Dublin Airport Authority declined to comment on the incident. (obf)
