Alejandro N. Vicente (22) aims high with his prototype: the student presented his new aircraft seats at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2023 in Hamburg last week. In his vision, economy passengers should sit on top of each other in the future – and give them more legroom.
Vicente shows in an Instagram post what his “chaise lounge” would look like. First the television channel “CNN” reported.
More comfort, more space
In the eyes of the Spaniard, there will soon be double-decker rows of seats in addition to double-decker aircraft. Still, he does not want to completely abolish the normal seats in an airplane. His “chaise longue” should be in the center, with the normal rows of seats on the left and right.
What looks uncomfortable at first glance should actually offer considerably more comfort than before. Because: the inventor himself is almost 1.90 meters tall and knows how difficult narrow chairs can be. Its chaise longue not only promises more comfort, but also more space – throughout the aircraft.
More than 11,000 comments have already been collected under an Instagram post. Users seem to be very concerned, especially about the lower row of seats. “Great, soon claustrophobic people won’t be able to fly,” one wrote. Some are enthusiastic about Vicente’s idea: “This is just the beginning of something big. Keep it up!”
Former university project
His controversial concept started small – a university project in 2021. After Vicente had two successes in the aviation industry, his vision sparked a heated debate on social media.
“When you show something new, everyone hates it at first. People are afraid of change,” explains Vicente. However, the young visionary does not want to be put off by this: “The more you show the project and develop it further, the more people get used to it.”
