The children and young people between one month and 15 years old were taken from the Maygoma orphanage to Wad Madani, about 200 kilometers to the north, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported in Geneva on Thursday. The ICRC received security assurances from both sides of the conflict that the convoy would not be attacked. The action took place on Wednesday at the request of the government.
“We are very relieved that these children are safe,” said Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan. “They have been going through an incredibly difficult time in a conflict-ridden area for the past six weeks. They had no access to adequate health care, which was especially difficult for children with special needs.” Some children are mentally ill.
The army and paramilitary units of the former vice president have been fighting for supremacy in Sudan since mid-April. The president and vice president are generals who seized power together in 2021, but then fell out. A ceasefire brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia expired last weekend.
