The Russian offensive war against Ukraine escalated dangerously after the explosion of the important Kachowka dam – with as yet unpredictable ecological and military consequences.
Exactly how the dam broke and who is responsible is still a matter of speculation. While Ukraine and Russia blame each other, the Ukrainian people are suffering the terrible consequences of the dam collapse. Since Tuesday, masses of water from the Kachowka reservoir have flowed unimpeded through the wide breach in the wall, flooding many towns in the flat south of Ukraine.
This is the situation today.
The central square of Nova Kakhovka is still completely under water a day after the dam broke.
Many residents have to wade through the water in their homes.
While some streets are still completely under water…
… the flood has already passed into others, leaving debris and rubbish behind.
On the same day, the population of nearby Kherson was called to evacuate. People packed up their belongings, their pets and fled their homes. Escaping in cars was still possible in the morning, but soon cars could no longer drive through the streets.
The water rose steadily until large parts of Kherson were completely submerged.
On Wednesday, the water continued to rise. However, according to CNN, authorities believe the pace has slowed in any case.
For many houses, such news comes too late, they are completely under water.
…and this has dramatic consequences for humans and animals.
The rescuers are working at full speed.
Buildings are evacuated.
Only those who are rested can still move.
The situation is particularly difficult for many elderly people.
It suffered greatly.
Here an elderly woman is being hoisted into one of the sloops.
Cattle also have to flee from the water masses.
