Mysterious work in China: The country in the Far East is currently drilling a 10,000 meter deep hole in the ground. The work that began on Tuesday is expected to last 457 days.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the thin hole should pierce about ten layers of the Earth and reach deep into the Earth’s interior. The deepest layer of rock that people want to reach would have been formed about 145 million years ago.

“The difficulty of the drilling project can be compared to that of a large truck riding on two thin wire ropes,” engineer Sun Jinsheng told the agency.

China wants to promote earth research

According to the scientists, the project serves two purposes. On the one hand, data must be collected from the Earth’s interior, for example about the structure of the Earth. On the other hand, China also wants to test new technologies for oil extraction with the ten-kilometre deep hole being drilled in the Xinjiang oil region.

The discovery of the deeper layers of the earth is a stated goal of Chinese President Xi Jinping (69). In a speech in 2021, he called for a deeper exploration of the Earth’s interior. According to scientists, sources of crude oil should be discovered in this way and at the same time risks of possible natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions should be investigated.

Despite its 10,000-meter reach, the Chinese project won’t be the deepest hole ever drilled. This record is held by the famous Kola spring in Russia. In 1989, after 20 years of drilling, it reached a depth of 12,262 meters. (zis)
