Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has publicly announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. “I am announcing before God and my family today that I am running for President of the United States,” he said in a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday. The 64-year-old had already submitted the necessary documents to the Federal Election Commission on Monday.
I believe in the American people and I have faith that God is not done with America yet. Together we can bring this country back, and the best days for the greatest nation on Earth are yet to come! 🇺🇸 #pence2024 pic.twitter.com/A8EkqgCDAm

With the application, Pence also challenges his former boss Donald Trump, who wants to participate again after his defeat in 2020. Pence was his deputy from 2017 to 2021. The two have a rocky relationship — and a mixed past together.
The presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. An internal party primary will decide who will eventually become the official candidate.
With his announcement, Pence also expands the field of Republican aspirants. Most prominent of these, besides Trump, are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. More will probably follow. (saw/sda/dpa)
