The “Last Generation” caused a sensation again on Tuesday. This time, however, motorists were spared. Instead, the activists of the climate protection organization explicitly targeted the wealthy.

At around 10 a.m., five people between the ages of 21 and 60 used bolt cutters to gain access to the airport on the German island of Sylt. Their destination: a private jet. The activists sprayed orange warning paint on the machine and affixed banners reading “Your luxury = our drought” and “Your luxury = our crop failures” on the plane. The activists then clung to the aircraft carriers.

Then one of the activists gave a speech to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64). Background: Scholz had recently criticized in the newspaper “Die Zeit” that the demands of the climate protection organization were too vague. The climate stickers did not let that go.

The Scholz government has failed

In the speech, the activists explained that the lifestyle of the super-rich would have a heavy impact on the climate: “A four-hour private flight emits as much CO₂ as an average person in a year. The emissions that billionaires alone are responsible for their own consumption, with private jets, superyachts and luxury villas, is a thousand times global emissions per capita.

The “Last Generation” demands that Chancellor Scholz intervene: “The owners of private jets, limousines and superyachts will not leave them voluntarily. To reduce these emissions, rules and laws are needed.” To this end, a randomly selected works council is convened.

Theodor Scharr, spokesman for the “Last Generation”, accused Scholz of failing on climate so far. “To date, the Scholz government has not presented a concrete plan to meet its own climate targets.” He also criticizes the fact that the current climate protection plan was deemed insufficient by the Federal Constitutional Court.

The Public Prosecution Service is involved

It is uncertain whether the action will change anything about the political situation. Obviously, there will be legal ramifications. “Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the activists for unauthorized access to a security area, trespassing and property damage,” says the German police when asked by Blick. In addition, the Public Prosecution Service is investigating coercion.

The police also said that air traffic will not be affected by the action. There is no information yet about the owner of the private jet.
