Nord Stream attack: US informed of Ukrainian sabotage plans in June 2022 Russians declare state of emergency – Kakhovka dam blast explained in 5 points

New revelations about the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea: The US secret service CIA is said to have been informed in June 2022 of possible sabotage plans by the Ukrainians.

As early as June 2022, the US government is said to be aware of plans by the Ukrainian armed forces to attack the Nord Stream pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The “Washington Post” reports this on Tuesday, referring to Secret Service documents that were illegally passed on by a national guard on the Internet platform Discord until a few weeks ago.

The information has therefore been collected by a European intelligence service that cooperates with the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The attack plans were extremely detailed, the “Post” writes, and would have essentially resembled the act of sabotage that largely paralyzed the pipelines in September 2022.

Since then, there has been lively speculation about the background to this act, and not only in Washington. Most recently, the German media continued to give new details about a trail that should lead to Ukraine. The confused story revolves around a crew who, equipped with false passports, rented a sailing yacht in Rostock, traces of explosives on board this boat and possible moneylenders in Eastern Europe. At least one of the crew members is said to have served in the Ukrainian army.

Zelenskyj would not have been informed about sabotage plans

The document now described in the Post article does not provide any information as to whether these speculations could be true. However, the plans leaked to the CIA broadly correspond to the act of sabotage actually committed. (One of the disturbing discrepancies: The Ukrainians reportedly wanted to attack only the two strands of Nord Stream 1; the newer Nord Stream 2 pipeline is not mentioned in the attack plans.)

The secret document would also show that all wires in Ukraine converged with Valery Zalushni, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Zalushni deliberately refrained from informing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the sabotage plans so that he could credibly deny that Ukraine was behind the attack on the pipelines.

It is unclear how the CIA and the White House responded to the Ukrainians’ sabotage plans. The Post article is silent on this aspect. John Kirby, a spokesman for President Biden, declined to comment on the article Tuesday. When asked if Washington was investigating the attack, Kirby said “No” and referred to the investigations in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. (aargauerzeitung.ch)
