Ukraine has so far denied any support for the Russian guerrillas who are currently parading Putin’s troops across the border in the Belgorod region. However, now suspicions are growing that Kiev directly supports the “Legion Freedom of Russia” and the “Russian Volunteer Corps” – for example, with weapons. The Belgian government is now demanding clarification about how the militias obtained assault rifles from Belgian arsenals, the newspaper Le Soir reports.

Accordingly, the foreign and defense ministers want to ask the Ukrainian authorities for clarification “as soon as possible”. specified source according to the Belgian government. “This is explicitly stated in the documents accompanying each delivery. These weapons are not allowed for groups pursuing an internal Russian agenda.”

Kiev’s dubious allies

According to the Washington Post, the assault rifles in the militia’s hands are SCAR weapons manufactured in Belgium and the Czech Republic; verified photos also show at least one AT-4 bazooka, which is common in NATO armies; Citing US intelligence, the newspaper also reported that the attackers had at least four MRAP mine-resistant armored vehicles in their possession. According to the report, three of these vehicles came from the United States and one from Poland. It is still unclear through which channels the militias obtained their weapons.

Public support for the Russian partisans would be doubly inconvenient for the Ukrainian government. On the one hand, Western partner countries could reduce their arms aid to Kiev for fear of a direct conflict with Russia. On the other hand, the “Legion Freedom of Russia” consists of nationalist actors, the “Russian Volunteer Corps” even consists of open right-wing extremists and neo-Nazis known throughout Europe. Their leader, Denis Kapustin aka Nikitin, recently hinted that his force cooperates with the Ukrainian military intelligence agency HUR.

HUR boss Kyrylo Budanov has denied cooperation with the militias, but events in Russia are closely followed. The Ukrainian government has not commented on the latest reports. Tactically, the attacks on Russian soil serve Kiev well, as they force the Russian military to withdraw troops from Ukraine and move them into Russia’s disputed territories. The Ukrainian army is expected to launch its long-awaited counter-offensive to liberate the occupied territories. The first attacks are now being reported from various front sections.
