Former Vice President Pence officially announces his candidacy and will face Trump in the Republican primary

Former Vice President Mike Pence filed his 2024 presidential bid with the US Federal Election Commission on Monday, confirming that he will run in the Republican primary with his former ally Donald Trump.

Pence plans to launch his campaign next Wednesday at the event in Iowa, one of the key primary states, after months of speculation about his possible participation in the fight for the Republican nomination. On the same day, he will participate in a meeting with citizens organized by the CNN network in Des Moines, the capital of that state.

Pence was a close ally of Trump during his four years in office, but their cooperation was terminated as a result of the then president’s accusations of election fraud, rejected at all judicial levels, and his role in the attack on the Capitol.

Pence joins a a large group of candidates for the Republican nomination: Donald Trump; Florida Governor Ron DeSantis; former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley; former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

Together with them, the candidacy was presented by businessmen Vivek Ramaswamy, Ryan Binkley and Perry Johnson, as well as presenter Larry Elder, reports Efe.

Polls with a clear favorite

According to a weighted average of polls conducted by the website FiveThirtyEight, Trump is currently leading the polls as the favorite to win the Republican nomination for president, followed by DeSantis, Pence, Haley and Ramaswamy.

The four years he served as vice president, and before that as a congressman (2001-2013) and governor of Indiana (2013-2017), count as support for Pence.

Have support of a super PAC dedicated to America, which he launched in mid-May and co-chairs with former Texas Congressman Jeb Hensarling and veteran Republican consultant Scott Reed. A Super PAC is a fundraising organization that can collect donations from individuals, corporations and unions and spend unlimited amounts of funds.

A man of deep religious conviction, Pence can be a strong claim for evangelical votersto whom they often speak about their faith and issues that are important to them, such as anti-abortion politics and freedom of expression.

In that sense, Pence has made it clear that he supports states that enact restrictive laws further restrict access to abortion and believes that the abortion pill mifepristone, which is most commonly used to terminate a pregnancy in the US, should not be placed on the market. At the federal level, he defended the existence of a law that prohibits abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy.

During the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Pence, who was acting as Senate President that day by virtue of his position as Vice President of the country, he ignored the appeals Trump to obstruct the ratification of Democrat Joe Biden for US President after winning the election.
