Painting Picasso raises 3.4 million euros in Cologne Partisans in Russia apparently fight with NATO weapons

The painting “Buste de femme” (Bust of a woman) by Pablo Picasso has been auctioned in Cologne for 3.4 million euros. “The offer is above expectations,” says a spokeswoman for auction house Van Ham on Monday evening. A telephone bidder from Switzerland made the highest bid. The estimated value was 1.5 to 2.5 million euros.

The late, large-format work shows the shifted perspectives that are so typical of Picasso (1881-1973): profile and front view are intertwined. The color of the image is reduced to yellow and gray tones.

The 1971 painting shows Picasso’s second wife, Jacqueline Roque (1927-1986) Picasso painted a total of 400 portraits of his partner, who was 46 years his junior.

The catalog states that Jacqueline was Picasso’s “muse and lover, but also unquestioning and self-sacrificing assistant, manager and servant”. “The possessive genius of painting demanded the woman’s unconditional self-surrender, who in turn took him completely for himself and his art.” (sda/dpa)
