Swissmedic approves modified Covid vaccine

The Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Swissmedic, has approved a modified vaccine against the coronavirus. In addition to the original Sars-CoV-2 strain, this also includes the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5, Swissmedic announced on Tuesday.

Pfizer’s vaccine was intended to be used as a booster dose in people 12 years and older. The vaccine has been modified to better match the circulating variants of the coronavirus, Swissmedic said.

The protective efficacy of the bivalent vaccine against omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5, as measured by antibody concentration, would be higher than that of the original Comirnaty vaccine. The protective effect against the original Sars-CoV-2 virus (Wuhan type) corresponds to the effect of the original Comirnaty vaccine. (sda)
