At Easter there are the traditional Easter shows “Who wants to be a millionaire?”. In almost eight hours of airtime, several candidates attacked Günther Jauch’s hot seat on Sunday and Monday evening. No one really got very far, however, but the programs offered great entertainment value – including an initial glitch and several spectacular crashes.
Luca Demirel’s ladder of questions was probably the most exciting. The 25-year-old was eventually fired by Jauch with “He put on a huge show” – and for good reason. At first, the rebellious future teacher even knows the answers several times before he can even read the four possibilities.
But even with the question of 200 euros there is a glitch: when asked under which terms empanadas, gyoza, manti, pierogi and ravioli can be summarized, the candidate receives four possible answers that… make little sense.
Jauch soon realizes that something can’t be right. “Well, we’ve never had that either!” He appeals to the editors to finally put the bottle of Kölsch aside. And: “I can already see the headlines: ‘Massive slump in who wants to be a millionaire?!'”
After agonizing minutes, in which Günther Jauch’s editors get fat again, it still works: questions and answers match, Luca Demirel knows the right one and continues to make an extremely sovereign and self-confident appearance. In fact, he’s so confident that he doesn’t trust his companion, who can answer the 32,000 euro question – an extra prankster from the Easter special – even though he knew the answer. Demirel then hits the extra joker. It was the only mistake he made until then.
But at some point the question of 64,000 euros pops up. A football question:
The Mönchengladbach and football fan is optimistic anyway: “No problem, I’ve learned all the World Cup finals by heart.” He can even name every World Cup final since 1982. But that doesn’t really help him answer the question.
Lucky for him he has two more jokers, Demirel cashes in the 50/50. He even had the phone joke, but the 25-year-old decided against it (“That’s no use, I just have to answer that.”) The answers “Inter Milan & FC Bayern” and “Real Madrid & FC Arsenal” remain. The candidate is then convinced that no Bayern player was in the final between Italy and France in 2006 – “I would know.” Unfortunately, there was only one Bayern player in that memorable 2006 final: French defender Willy Sagnol.
Memorable – this is how Luca Demirel, who now has to go home with the 500 euros, must remember the evening. Günther Jauch’s somewhat feeble consolation: “You were the best 500 in a long time!”
