Pharmacies will soon be allowed to dispense heroin in certain cases

From 1 April, pharmacies may dispense heroin. The Bundesrat simplifies the provision of heroin for medical purposes. On Friday, he approved two amendments to the regulation.

The background to the new regulation is that more and more elderly patients are being treated with heroin, as the state government wrote in a statement.

Previously, addicts could only obtain pharmaceutically manufactured heroin from a specialized centre, but now this must also be possible in pharmacies or other suitable facilities. With the amendment, the Bundesrat says it wants to take into account the needs of those who cannot visit such a center two or three times a day due to their age, illness or physical distance.

The second amendment to the regulation allows several daily doses to be provided at the same time in certain cases. A similar arrangement had already been introduced for a limited period during the corona pandemic. The Federal Council justifies its continuation by facilitating the reintegration of addicts.
