There is a serious shortage of some antibiotics in Switzerland. The federal government is therefore releasing further mandatory supplies to meet demand. Due to Covid-19 and a strong and persistent wave of infections, the supply situation has deteriorated, the company said.
The regulation for the release of mandatory stocks of antibiotics will be adjusted accordingly on March 1, 2023, the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (BWL) announced on Friday. This also allows larger quantities of antibiotics in tablet and capsule form to be removed from the mandatory stocks.
The BWL wrote that companies were struggling to meet the increased demand for antibiotics. Supply interruptions have now been reported for 25 antibiotic products. 20 of these reports concern medicines that are taken as tablets or capsules.
Despite the release of mandatory stocks, the market is said to have only just been supplied. If demand increases globally and over the long term, gaps in supply cannot be ruled out despite the release. (sda)
