Do you know the largest lakes in the world?

Best Quizzticle Class

60 years ago, the Aral Sea between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan would easily have been on this list. Unfortunately, over time, local governments have diverted all of the inflow water to agricultural irrigation. The area shrank from over 69,000 km² to just 7,000 km². That’s a nearly 90 percent reduction — an unprecedented tragedy.

We are all the happier that there are still large bodies of water. Some are even very large: the first four are all larger than all of Switzerland. We can’t quite keep up with our ponds in comparison:

Lake Geneva: 580 km²
Lake Constance: 536 km²
Lake Neuchâtel: 215 km²
Lake Maggiore: 212 km²

If you already knew all this, it’s no problem to list the largest lakes in the world, right?
