The one with the ‘American Beauty’ hand, for example. Or the bald 007. That and five other bizarre facts from the history of popular culture that are often overlooked.

Christina Hendricks has been a world-famous actress since her role as Joan Holloway in “Mad Men” (2007-2015). But her first high-profile appearance in the business was… a little different:

“I used to work as a model and one of the jobs I got was for a movie poster. There were two models, me and Chloe Hunter, also an actress,” said Hendricks, who only revealed the secret on Instagram in 2019. “And we did different versions of her hand and her stomach, and my stomach, and her hand, and my hand, and so on. In the end my hand and her stomach won. For me it was just a normal job, I was grateful for it. I probably made a hundred dollars or something. I had no idea what movie it was. Later I saw the American Beauty poster and thought, ‘Hey, that’s my hand!'”

You know which one: that concert at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York City, in 1965, where the Beatles performed in front of tens of thousands of fans, and neither the audience nor the musicians could hear the songs they were playing, so loud was the screaming.

(Original caption) This is a general view of fans attending a Beatles concert at Shea Stadium, circa 1965.

Original sound Meryl Streep: “After crying for three days and then promising to do the dishes for the next four years, my parents gave in and let me go to New York for the first time to see this new English band. Everyone was so excited I sat in the 116th row and had a better view of New Jersey than from the small center stage. But no matter how unforgettably the words of their songs are written in my heart, I will never forget the sight of those four boys running across the lawn to the stage.”

Writer AA Milne, author of the Winnie the Pooh children’s books, lived with his son Christopher (Japanese, dem Christopher Robin from the Pooh books) on a beautiful, busy estate in the southern English county of Sussex called Cotchford Farm. This house and the estate with its forest area also formed the inspiration for the Pooh stories (in which numerous landscape features are described in detail). In the late 1960s, the house was owned by Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, who drowned in the swimming pool there under mysterious circumstances on July 3, 1969.

Sean Connery started losing his hair at a young age. Connery wore a hairpiece from the first Bond film (“Dr. No”, 1962). Thanks to the solid work of the makeup teams in each of his seven James Bond films, no one noticed.

His then wife, Australian actress Diane Cilento (pictured above), described it this way: “Oh, there’s nothing more erotic than shaving my husband’s back while he’s in the bath, putting on his hairpiece so he can go and others can please women in front of the camera.”

Elvis Presley, the king of rock ‘n’ roll, owner of not one but two airplanes with gold-plated toilet seats, originally came from the bottom up. When he was young in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis’ family was so desperately poor that hunger was a constant companion. The BBC documentary “The Burger and the King – the Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley” reports that meat was at its best served in the form of squirrels shot in the woods and fried at home.

This file photo shows Elvis Presley (left) and Ann Margaret (right) in a scene from the 1964 Hollywood film "Live Las Vegas". The musical/romance was one of Ann Margaret's early films, ...

The malnutrition he experienced as a child was likely one of the reasons why the king displayed a voracious appetite for high-calorie foods (fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, anyone?) throughout his life. And also the reason why his fellow musicians realized during the very first tour that he had never eaten a steak with a fork and knife. “He had never done this before. We had to teach him,” says guitarist Scotty Moore.

The rustic cloaks of the Night’s Watch in ‘Game of Thrones’ are made from Ikea carpets. The show’s costume department bought a pallet of cheap rugs, cut them a bit, dyed them and – tadaa! – there were all the iconic capes of the Night watch.

So if you want to make a Halloween costume (or are a member of a pagan metal band), Ikea is the right place for you. Hey, Ikea itself provided instructions for this:

FILE - In this 1969 file photo, Charles Manson is escorted to his arraignment on charges of conspiracy and murder in connection with the Sharon Tate murder trial. Authorities say Manson, cult leader and master...

Much is known about the musical ambitions of mass murderer Charles Manson. But rumor has it that some of the ties between him and members of the Hollywood music scene were much closer and friendlier than believed. We know that 10050 Cielo Drive in Hollywood – the site of the brutal murder of heavily pregnant actress Sharon Tate and her friends Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent and Jay Sebring on August 9, 1969 – was previously the home of music producer Terry Melcher.

Manson had also auditioned for Melcher several times in hopes of getting a recording contract. Ultimately, Melcher refused. What is less known is that Melcher was a welcome guest in the Manson ‘Family’ (as the cult-like group of young women and men around Charles Manson called themselves) and apparently had a sexual relationship with the then 15-year-old family. member Ruth Ann Moorhouse (most likely initiated by Manson).

Melcher and Manson were introduced by their mutual friend Dennis Wilson, drummer for the Beach Boys. The latter had a closer friendship with the later mass murderer – Manson lived in Wilson’s house for a while. As a result, Manson was often present with the Wilson brothers of Beach Boys (guitarist Carl and songwriter and producer Brian) to promote his songs. And so it was that in 1968 the Beach Boys recorded the Charles Manson song “Never Learn Not to Love.”

The original title was ‘Cease to Exist’. Manson was present at the recording of this, but did not participate. Brian and Dennis Wilson have extensively reworked the song and expanded the arrangement considerably. Manson was not concerned about the musical changes, but was angry that they had changed his lyrics. On the record release, the song was credited to Dennis Wilson. According to Dennis, Manson had voluntarily exchanged his official copyright for a sum of money and a motorcycle. However, band engineer Stephen Desper recalls that the band left out Manson’s name in retaliation for the theft of that same money and motorcycle.

Charles Manson took part in the casting for The Monkees. He even made it to the very last round of interviews.

This oft-quoted urban legend is refuted by the simple fact that in November 1965, when the castings for the TV show and rock band took place, Manson was still in prison for previous offenses. It is believed that Monkees bandmates Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones jokingly started the rumor.
