Employees of the city of Freiburg who suffer from severe recurring menstrual cramps should be able to receive up to three days of paid vacation. This is what the city parliament demands.
With 49 votes in favor and 13 abstentions, the General Council approved a corresponding proposal from the ranks of the Greens, SP and Green Liberals on Monday evening. Menstrual leave must be possible without a doctor’s certificate.
Menstrual pain is still an underestimated phenomenon in women’s work, it was said in the debate. The same rules should apply as for absences due to illness, even if menstrual leave concerns regular absences.
The city council supports the project and will now work out an amendment to the personnel regulations. Menstrual leave is also a problem elsewhere. The cities of Zurich and Lausanne have already decided on pilot projects. (dabbing/sda)
