Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel of Lynchburg, Tennessee was known throughout the city for his entrepreneurial spirit. He reportedly bought his first still at the age of 14. He is said to have sold the first home-distilled whiskey in the area.

After founding his company, he also started marketing himself. From then on, Daniel dressed like a southern plantation owner: with a frock coat, vest and straw hat. This look had already gone out of fashion by then. However, that was exactly what seemed to be well received.

The advertisement served its purpose. The company became increasingly successful. In 1880, Daniel’s cousin Lem Motlow also joined the distillery. But as Jack Daniel’s vault became more and more full, it would ultimately be his downfall.

It is said that Jack Daniel often forgot the combination to his safe. This is what happened one morning in 1911. 65-year-old Daniël is said to have forgotten the combination and kicked the safe out of anger.

What is known is that Jack Daniel’s toe became increasingly inflamed over time. At one point the toe even had to be amputated. But the rest of the infection continued to spread. On October 10, 1911, Jack Daniel finally died of blood poisoning. His nephew and cousin continued to run the company. Jack Daniel had no wife or children.
