The pinnacle of the electric car? Croatian automaker Rimac’s electric super sports car Nevera provides 1914 hp (1407 kW) thanks to its four-wheel drive motor.

Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini – these brands are considered the best in the automotive world. After all three were founded in 1909, 1947, and 1948, it took decades to reach their peak. But the automotive world is rapidly changing as cars become more digital and drivers more electrified. Some brands are disappearing even faster than they could make big announcements at launch. Others stand up to stay. Like Rimac. In less than a decade, Croatian founder and inventor Mate Rimac (35) launched his company from the ground up into the world’s most powerful production car and took over Bugatti on the way.

Today we let Rimac Nevera throw us. Rimac stole his name during sudden brief storms on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. “If the weather suddenly changes completely on a fine day, then Nevera comes,” explains Rimac test pilot Branimir Tomurad. Our test car suddenly rolls in front of the Hotel Chedi in Andermatt UR, whispering.

no spaceship

Put your backpack in the 100-liter trunk and get on. Thanks to the butterfly doors, which require a lot of effort to open, it is quite easy even for drivers who are 1.90 meters tall. Tomurad gets into the passenger seat; as technical and moral support so that the horses do not run away with us. The interior looks Scandinavian, with a low seating position and narrow headroom. At the bottom of the center console shines a large touchscreen, under which there are seven buttons for operating the windows, door locks and vehicle settings. A display for the driver and front passenger is located on the dashboard.

We use the rotary knob to the left of the steering wheel to shift into gear and exit the hotel courtyard in complete silence. Most electric vehicles threaten us with the buzz of the tram or the buzz of the Starship Enterprise’s warp drive and sound generator, but in Nevera you hear the car purely. “We want to convey a real driving experience,” says Tomurad. The better you feel the Nevera and the immediacy of its steering. At least in cruise mode, the chassis is comfortably tuned, the seats are more comfortable than expected. At Nevera you can relax in the pool.

striking

It starts in the direction of Oberalp Pass. Green flounder attracts attention like a magnet – almost everyone’s attention. Pedestrians wave and thumbs up – and even oncoming motorcyclists. The Nevera is probably the quietest hypercar you’ve ever seen. Most of the 1914 hp (1407 kW) is still dormant. But if you step on the accelerator with your big toe, the car will speed past a group of cyclists without a trace.

Tomurad switches to track mode: the accelerator pedal responds faster, the steering becomes firmer. In addition, the rigidity of the chassis increases and active aerodynamic attachments such as the rear spoiler and the air vent in the front hood go into aggressive mode. Cornering speeds increase, braking becomes unnecessary. And then Tomurad says: “Now step on it.”

pure madness

All of a sudden, four electric motors deliver an unimaginable torque of 2,360 Newton meters. For comparison: Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S doesn’t manage nearly half. A torque steering system regulates the torque per wheel – every newton meter actually reaches the asphalt as a drive. As a result, acceleration pushes our brains behind our heads so much that we immediately get off the pedal and apply the brakes. Zero to 80 in the blink of an eye – what a start. Theoretically, Nevera breaks the 100 limit in under two seconds – 300 km/h is reached in 9.3 seconds and the end is reached at 412 km/h. No, we would only try this on a closed airport runway.

Tomurad grins and can’t get enough of our confused faces. “Quick, right?” And light: despite the XXL battery, the carbon chassis is less than 200 kilograms and the overall weight is just under 2300 kilograms. The battery with a capacity of 120 kilowatt-hours (kWh) extends in an H shape on the lower body, providing durability and a range of approximately 490 kilometers compared to the standard cycle. According to Tomurad, 350 kilometers on the highway is certainly possible. The 350-kilowatt water-cooled battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 25 minutes, thanks to 800-volt technology similar to that used in Hyundai, Kia and Porsche models.

Everyday hero for the super rich

Too much power needs to be tamed. In addition to powerful brakes and recovery, the raised rear spoiler also supports itself against the headwind. Nevera recently set a record 23 – but what’s particularly impressive is how comfortably Chedi came back ahead. And there is another argument in favor of the super electric car: for example, due to the absence of a combustion engine, service costs are likely to be significantly lower than for a Bugatti Chiron. Considering the purchase price of one of the 150 Nevera – excluding taxes – of about two million francs, many buyers should still be indifferent.
