Two years later, Dacia is giving its small electric SUV Spring a more powerful engine this summer.

A lot of cars for the money – that’s what Dacia is for. Because the Renault subsidiary in Romania attaches great importance to good value for money. Side effect: Since they still have a budget, many Dacia customers can buy the best equipment right away. And because Dacia spends the most money on chassis, the brand is adding an “Extreme” equipment package to all models. This includes, for example, a practical camping conversion kit for the hybrid cross jogger.

The “Extreme” version of the 3.73-metre-long E-SUV Spring features new details such as copper-coloured mirror caps or special floor mats. At the request of numerous new customers who brought the cheapest electric car in Switzerland to Dacia: 72 percent of the approximately 110,000 Spring buyers worldwide switched from other car brands to Dacia. The craftsmanship is valuable, the seats are comfortable, and the TomTom graphic navigation does a solid job.

Customers wanted more steam

The most important concern of customers was something else: more steam. Power has been increased to 65 hp (48 kW) by adding 21 hp (15 kW) to the engine. However, they are available for only 20,790 Francs in the “Extreme” equipment mentioned. Slightly less than CHF 19,990, the “Expression” Spring 45 has 44 hp (33 kW). To get more power from the e-machine, its speed was increased from 8500 rpm (rpm) to 14,700 rpm and at the same time the transmission ratio was almost doubled. This puts more power on the drive wheels – the result is outstanding: the Spring 65 sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 13.7 seconds and is therefore 5.4 seconds faster than the Spring 45.

The top speed of 125 km/h remains the same as the previous model. The increase in performance has a positive effect, especially at high speeds or when squeezing into the traffic flow. Despite its light weight of 1050 kilograms, consumption rises from 13.9 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per 100 kilometers to 14.5 kWh per 100 kilometers. The capacity of the battery remains the same at 26.8 kilowatt-hours, so the range is reduced by ten to 220 kilometers (WLTP).

Adapts perfectly to the city

The chassis of the electric crossover does its job properly. However, the 14-inch tires desperately struggle for grip on wet surfaces. Wet tram tracks turned out to be treacherous, too, and traction is pretty bad. Thanks to a new reduction gear, wheel torque is increased and acceleration and recovery are more effective. Unfortunately, its effects are weakened on land because the mismatched steering moves imprecisely, especially on fast corners. To be fair, the Dacia Spring is primarily a city car and is often used as a second car.

It still fulfills these core competencies, and then it’s not difficult at all, with a battery with a maximum charge capacity of 30 kW that can be charged from zero to 80 percent in just 56 minutes. Most Spring owners only drive an average of 31 kilometers per day in urban areas. The new Dacia Spring in Extreme version can be ordered now and will be delivered from summer 2023.
