According to the Federal Council, Google and Co. have to pay for journalistic content

If a major search engine shows excerpts from newspaper articles in the search results, the online service will pay a fee for this in the future. The Bundesrat proposes this. On Wednesday, he opened the consultation on the so-called co-author right.

The core of the proposal should be that large media outlets that earn money from the content of others should reward the work of journalists and publishers. Under the draft law, only portals with an average number of users representing at least 10 percent of the Swiss population per year would have to pay a fee – currently about 900,000 users.

The Bundesrat leaves open the question of whether the sharing of media templates by social media users leads to a payment obligation on the part of the providers. He proposes two options for this.

The new regulations should have no consequences for internet users. According to the Federal Council, the additional income for the media cannot yet be estimated.
