Nowhere else in Europe can you marvel at such rare and expensive classic cars as at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como (I). Every year in May, an international jury selects the most beautiful classic cars in eight classes at the luxury hotel of the same name. This year, a 1935 US supercar of German origin took the prestigious overall winner title: Best in Show was the Duesenberg SJ Guerney Nutting Speedster, owned by US real estate entrepreneur William Lyon (48).

Like every Duesenberg, the two-seater open-top vehicle with a one-time supercharged engine and 320 hp reaches a top speed of 220 km/h. Built for an Indian Maharaja in exile in California, it was rediscovered in 1959 and purchased by the current owner’s father. The company was founded 110 years ago by immigrated German brothers August and Fred Duesenberg.

Couldn’t be more elegant

In the 1920s and 1930s Duesenberg’s handmade cars were seen as the pinnacle of US brands. Hollywood stars such as Gary Cooper (1901-1961), Clark Gable (1901-1960), Greta Garbo (1905-1990), and James Cagney (1899-1986) and underground magnates of the US east coast drove Duesenberg. “It’s a Duesy” has become the everyday word for all things incomparably great. More efficient mass production, Ford-style, finally put an end to the brand in 1937.

A total of 160 classics were shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este this year and enjoyed by around 15,000 visitors. The next comparable event for the superclassics is scheduled for August in Pebble Beach, California.
