Chinese automaker Human Horizons currently only has two models on the Chinese market. With the sporty luxury sedan HiPhi Z and the crossover HiPhi X, reminiscent of Tesla’s Model X with its gull-wing rear doors only. Both models are based on the same electric platform, have plenty of power (593 and 670 hp, respectively) and 4×4 and all-wheel steering.

Both HiPhi models will be launched in Germany and Norway by the end of the year as a kind of test balloon and to explore the European market. The Chinese are targeting electric models from Tesla and Polestar, as well as European premium manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

gorgeous optics

In terms of design, HiPhi vehicles are more flamboyant than their European and American rivals. First of all, the 5.04 meter long and 670 hp (494 kW) HiPhi Z, which starts at RMB 610,000 (about CHF 80,000) in China, is positioned as a flagship and “digital GT”. There are eye-catching LED light tricks not only at the back but also at the front. On the wing, the Chinese electro athlete can show alternating greetings such as “Hello World” in so-called islands of light, thereby communicating with the environment.

Great coverage

With its doors opening in opposite directions, the HiPhi Z spins on huge 22-inch air-suspended wheels and has a rear spoiler that gradually extends from 80 speeds. Optionally, there are cameras and screens instead of rear-view mirrors for improved aerodynamics – this is how the HiPhi Z reaches a range of 700 kilometers thanks to a battery with a capacity of up to 120 kWh.

Unlike some of its competitors, the Chinese Tesla competitor wants to shine not only with long range, but also with the help of level 3 driver, which should rise to level 4 in the medium term. Not only a dozen cameras are installed in the Chinese luxury model, but also a large number of lidar and radar sensors that always scan the environment in real time.

too much power

With the crossover HiPhi X, Human Horizons’ second model, starting at RMB 570,000 (approximately CHF 75,000) in China, the customer can choose between a four- or six-seat configuration. In the Chinese consumption cycle, the 5.20 meter long Tesla Model X rival has a range of up to 560 kilometers thanks to the 97 kWh battery, and despite its weight of 2.6 tons, it accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h and even faster. More than four seconds up to a managed top speed of 200 km/h.

There are light shows not only outside, but also inside the luxury HiPhi models. Many of the functions can be operated via a central display that can be moved in all directions thanks to a joint, as well as by the steering wheel or by voice. For this purpose, a digital assistant called HiPhi-Bot with artificial intelligence that can also be voice operated is on board.

New entry-level model

If Human Horizons launches in Europe with two models, X and Z, the Chinese announced another series for the domestic market a month ago. Although it is not as eye-catching as the X and Z models as an entry-level model, it has powerful LED light units that extend all the way to the front apron. The name of the New Human Horizons series? Y – One that should not be met with much enthusiasm at Tesla with the model of the same name.

But Ding Lei, the founder of Human Horizons, doesn’t care. “At Human Horizons, we constantly strive for innovation and want to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Our flagship HiPhi Z represents everything we want to be as a brand. We build our cars for people who, like us, are driven by the desire to discover and create.”
